Ask The HandyMan: DVD To Pocket PC
Posted by Tyler Regas on June 02, 2002 02:16 AM

Question #2 for today comes from Emugol:

I was wondering if there was any type of connection that I can use to connect a portable DVD player into my Pocket PC. I believe that it uses some type of "s" video cable, but not completely sure. Have you heard of anyone doing this type of configuration through their PPC? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If your Pocket PC device is a The Company Formerly Known As Compaq (also known as Hewlett-Packard) iPAQ 36xx, 37xx, or 38xx series device then you can take advantage of LifeView's FlyJacket i3800 multimedia sleeve. This sleeve is unique in that it not only provides video input and output solutions, but also an on-board CompactFlash Type II slot so you don't miss out on using your expansion cards.

As for the other end, if your portable DVD player has an S-Video port (which looks a lot like a PS/2 or DIN-9 port) then you're all set to use the FlyJacket i3800 as a portable monitor. Just keep in mind that you're going to get reduced battery time running such intensive tasks. Fortunately, the FlyJacket has a built-in battery for that purpose.

I hope that helps, Emugol. If anyone has a question for the HandyMan, drop him a line at this address.
