Are Those Tubes!?
Posted by Tyler Regas on June 06, 2002 05:10 PM

PHM is certainly stretching the definition of PDA for this item, but we thought our readers would find this product quite interesting. The product here is from AOpen, the makers of motherboards and other components for computer systems. AOpen is popular in the PC world because their designs are over-clocker friendly, meaning that they make it easy to make a processor run faster than it was intended to. The motherboard of interest is the new AX4B-533Tube, which under minimal scrutiny is a standard motherboard with AOpen's' standard enhancements.

If, however, you take a close look you will find a component that is as out of place as a snowman is in the Sahara. As you may have already inferred, the motherboard sports a Tube-based sound system. Tubes were common to computers prior to the invention of the resistor and the integrated chip, two primary components of modern computers. Tubes are now only common to very high-end audio equipment because they are costly to make... well. Check out the boards specs here and a large picture here. The main tube is located in the upper left corner, just left of the PCI slots.
