UPDATED: Javascript For Palm Browser
Posted by Tyler Regas on August 20, 2002 03:20 PM

Wes' question is: "I have a Handspring Treo 180 and I need a browser that can handle JavaScript. Are you aware of any that are available yet?"

As pointed out by reader Michael, there is a company called ilinx (EN|JP) which produces a new web browser for the Palm OS called Xiino. It is unclear whether ilinx was previously known as Palmscape, or simply changed their name to liven things up, but the latter seems most appropriate. The new company now offers an updated version of Palmscape which supports 128-bit encryption and JavaScript. The good news is that its only US$24.95 and US$14.95 to upgrade from Palmscape.

Sorry to say, there are no Java- or ECMA-script capable browsers for the Palm OS, but that is apparently a "just yet" kind of status. InfoSync today published a story purportedly revealing screenshots of the web browser slated to be bundled with Palm OS 5.0 coming out later this year wrapped in some potentially sweet hardware. You can take a look at it here.

Until then, the only thing that I can suggest is to use Palm VNC, a VNC viewer for your handheld that will let you access and utiltize a desktop system that is a) connected to the internet with an addressable IP, also known as static, and b) has the VNC server software running on it. The software is free and can be downloaded here (for the Palm) and here (for the desktop). The steep entry cost is in setup and not cash, but it may be worth it depending on what you need.

I hope that answered your question, Wes!

I tried Xiino on my Kyocera 6035 smartphone and it "kind of" worked, but it wouldn't let me switch to different frames on a page. ie I was able to get the navigation frame but not the main frame with the actual information on it.
