XScale Software Compatibility In iPAQs
Posted by Tyler Regas on August 15, 2002 11:26 PM
The 3900 series of iPAQ PDAs is based on the XScale PXA-250 processor from Intel's ARM Holdings subsidiary, which is the same company that developed the StrongArm SA-1100 that you can find in all of the older iPAQ devices. Fortunately, this means little because the PXA-250 can run all of the software that the SA-1100 can. The only problem is that the PXA-250 emulates the older processor, so its not as fast running certain operations that were optimized for its predecessor, despite the fact that it can run at 400MHz. In other words, if you have a Pocket PC 2002 device now, you can easily migrate everything over to a new iPAQ 3900 series device. Some things just might not work as quickly is all. I hope that answers your question, Alex. Email This Story
I've heard rumors to that effect, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. In my opinion, one would be better off keeping the cutting edge at arms length :) I'm always far more confortable with products that have a proven track record. Time will tell if the H3900 series is "Fly or Flawed" ;) Tyler Posted by: Tyler Regas on October 4, 2002 10:35 AMI heard rumours that the PXA250 built into ipaq 3970 has some trouble in it. Alex's question is: "Will The new iPaq 3900's run the same software as older devices or will they require totally new software?"
