Java Development Support For Handhelds?
Posted by Tyler Regas on August 24, 2002 10:36 AM

Paul's question is: "Which PDA’s have support for java development?"

As Java grows and gets better (read: faster) more and more systems are adopting it. The prime example of included Java support in a handheld is currently the Sharp Zaurus SL-5000 series. These handhelds, the 5000 and 5500, use Insignia's Jeode Java runtime. As far as I can tell, this is a standard Java runtime environment, though reading the SDK materials should prove helpful. Access to the SDK requires a free registration.

The only other device that I know of that ships with Java as part of its system is the RIM Blackberry 5810. RIM has a developers paper on working with Java for the 5810 here. Palm actively supports the promotion of Java for PDAs through the Java Community Process. Currently, the PDA Profile (JSR 75) was designed by Palm to meet the needs of PDA users and Java developers and appears to be supported by IBM, Sony, and even Sharp, among others.

I hope that helps!
