Missing Pocket PC File Size Reports?
Posted by Tyler Regas on August 27, 2002 12:08 PM
That's because there is no function that passes file size data to Explorer from the Pocket PC connected through ActiveSync. This is a limitation of how Windows CE deals with getting volume (read: drive) data from the card. Some cards offer data compatible with Windows CE, but most don't. You can see if your card is read properly by installing an application to your Pocket PC. When the Application Manager asks you if you would like to install the program in the default location, click No. You will then be offered a list of choices. Select your memory card. If it shows how much space will remain after the install, it is reporting. If not, then Windows can't get that needed volume data. All of that passes off to Explorer when your device is connected to ActiveSync and you use the Explore option. There are a few ways to get around this. First, you could get a card that is volume data compatible with Windows CE, but I'm sure that making another memory card investment was not what you expected. Second, you can use a file management tool on your Pocket PC. Several offer the ability to display file information. Finally, and I like this one the best, get an external card reader/writer. They can handle transfer rates at far greater speeds than ActiveSync can. The HandyMan is publishing a review on one today, in fact. I hope this helps you out, Steve. Email This Story

Steve's question is: "When I am looking at the contents of my PDA on my desktop PC using Explorer in the Mobile Device pane I can't find a way to get a report of the combined size of a group of selected files?"
