Wish List: Tyler Regas
Posted by Tyler Regas on November 29, 2001 02:43 PM

My first real mobile system was a Kaypro 10, a machine that I spent a lot of time working in WordStar on. To put it mildly, the 10 was a slow machine. It sported a 5" "green screen" display and two 5MB hard disks. I wasn't to have another mobile device until my first actual MacOS system, a PowerBook 145B (thanks Seth!) that I still have today. Soon after I received a Nintendo Game Boy Pocket as a gift. After that I purchased my first real PDA, an Apple Newton MessagePad 130, another device I still have. That was 1996.

Since then I've had a number of different devices of differing categories all the way from programmable calculators to industrial devices. I generally have no less than a dozen devices in my office at a time, and several more at home. I've been known to carry as many as four devices at one time. Of course, I've not had everything I've ever wanted in life or I wouldn't have a wish list, so without further ado, here's mine (in no particular order):

1. A Sony VAIO PCG-U3 with all accessories - This sublime gadget from the masters of miniaturization is a beauty in dark gray molded ABS plastic. As of yet, they are only available in Japan, but Dynamism is a great site for getting those cool systems here.

2. An unlimited GSM/GPRS or CDMA/1xRTT account option from any telco for no more than US$50 a month - I know that this is unreasonable, but I can dream :)

3. An Apple Newton MessagePad 2100 - This in mint condition with all periperhals and a few extras would just be incredible. I've been hoping I could write a Retro Look on this device and use it exclusively for one month as a laptop replacement. A lot of people I know actually do this and still take advantage of newer technologies like wireless and ATA memory cards.

4. A 2003 MINI Cooper S - Fully loaded with leather and GPS. I'd love to have a MINI PDA, but they won't be selling those in the States. Oh, and BRG with black roof and trim and body color mirrors :)

5. A Trip Around The World For Three - With stops in London, Paris, Tel Aviv, the Ivory Coast, Fez, Moscow, Hong Kong, Tokyo, to end with a cruise from Anchorage to the Port of Los Angeles. About three months for the whole thing would be just fine. All expenses paid, of course :)

6. US$10,000,000,000 per State To Donate To Rebuilding Education - The US educational system needs a serious overhaul and this would do it.

7. US$10,000,000,000 per State To Donate To Eliminate Homelessness - There's no reason at all for anyone to live without a home or not have food and work. Our politicians just don't find it much of a priority in helping others.

8. Two of each kind of PDA and handheld mobile device ever made - :)

9. A Decent Home Theatre System - As long as the tube is larger than 40"
and the surround sound system can handle THX with aplomb, I'll be happy.

10. A RocketCalc Titan T8-200 - At US$12,500 I won't be getting one soon, but this is about the coolest "desktop" system you can get. Before RocketCalc there was no such thing as a "Personal Cluster".
