When you have kids things just generally take longer. Sadly, technology doesn’t really make it any easier. You might be surprised to discover that I am not a PIM freak. In fact, I try to use PIMs as little as possible and I’m pretty successful with that effort. I’ve never found a PIM which liked me. There are plenty of them out there, too. I just can’t find one that works with what I like, nor is there likely to ever be one. I’m a nerd first and a journalist second. I get loads of gear all the time. Just check out my reviews, which really only represents about a third of what I get. Considering that the majority of the gear I get is mobility enabling, I should be able to find something which suits me and my needs. Continue reading »

As you can see, especially if you’ve been to The Dojo before, I’ve made some cosmetic changes. I’ll be making some additional changes, as well, but they’ll be relatively small. That’s the most obvious change, though. What you won’t see right away is that there will be a growing change in the content. I’ve bee advised by some influencial people that I should add more of myself to the site and not make it so damned dry all the time. After I stopped being angry about being called a wet noodle, I realized that what I was being told was true. Henceforth, I shall be injecting more and more of the myself into what I do on The Dojo. Oh, and aside from the anger and the wet noodle stuff, its all true.

Right now the Dojo’s rank is 408,214. According to Alexa, this means that the Dojo is the 408,214th most read website in Alexastan. Not just the other day the Dojo ranked at 405,342. Interestingly enough before that I ranked at an all time high of 340,000 something. Why is this interesting? Mostly because while my Alexa rank seems to be tanking, readership is growing. Last month I had 162,304 unique readers from around the globe (though mostly the US). Before that, I raked in 158,192. Now, on just the 10th of the month so far I have managed to coerce 65,851 extremely attractive and intelligent people to view the Dojo. I guess Alexastanians hate me. Maybe they should stop using Windows browsers as the benchmark for web activity. Lord knows there’s more to life than Windows! Here, take a look for yourself.

Head on over to Certless and checkout a little piece I put together about VIA’s new little PC kit. I’ll just say that the case can’t hold a CD-ROM drive. You might even be able to cram it into a pocket, if they’re large enough.

My apologies, kind readers. I’ve been swamped with some project work and jury duty, all of which has made it tough to keep the updates flowing. I’ve got some interesting items coming up and as time marches on we can only get closer to what will likely be deemed the craziest of WWDCs. Hang in there. I should have some stuff up today. In the meantime, go read Certless!

I have the very strong feeling that what I am about to reveal is likely already known. I’ve certainly made no effort to hide it, and it doesn’t come anywhere close to being as groundbreaking as unveiling who Fake Steve Jobs was. I, Tyler Regas, am MoboDojo. I am the Sensei and back in the day I was the PDA Handyman. I’ve long made an effort to make The Dojo, and PHM before it, much more than a simple blog, and in that admission I am also revealing that I’ve always felt that being a blogger made me less of a journalist. I’m not going to do that any more. From here on out, I will blog as myself and you will get my impressions and opinions, not those of some nebulous, omnipresent, non-existent “we”.

In other words, I’m not going to change a thing.

I did want to make it clear to my readers, though, that since its only me, myself, and I, that its not always easy to post as consistently and voluminously as sites like Gizmodo and Engadget do. This is why I’m very careful to select only those items which I am interested in, and if you share my enthusiasm then you very well might like what I have to say about it. To affect this oh so subtle change I have combed the site to make changes in how The Dojo is described. You’ll also note that, in the title, I now refer to blogging. Yes. I’ve bought it hook, line, and sinker. I’m a blogger. PLUG: Check out Certless!

PDA Handyman opened its internet doors in 2001 and in 2002 we started offering the Ask The Handyman feature. It was a hit and I even have a selection of the early ones in the Ye Olde News section. We had a server crash in October 2002 which lead to the move to a new host. A couple of years later we were hacked by a funny guy who thought he was cool by squashing our database and losing nearly 2,000 stories, opinion pieces, reviews, and yes, Ask The Handyman entries. That event hit us hard as we had to live with the fact that we had not safely backed everything up and that some punk had knocked all of our hard work down because he felt it was validating.

So now, a few hundred hours of therapy and anti-depression prescriptions later we’re able to fire it up again! Bust out your old quandrys and new issues. We take anything and everything. We once had a reader who had searched for a regular handyman find us and ask us about what a re-modeling of his kitchen should cost. We answered him! Head on over to the Contact Us page and click the link to get started!

Sister site, Certless, has just published its first issue of Sillycon Valley as well as two other mini-preview comics. Certless will publish one new comic every two weeks until everything ramps up, then they will publish one a week. Head on over and take a look.

My apologies for the lack of updates recently. I’ve been building out our new website, Certless. If you are a technology professional, you know a lot about certifications. You either have them and find that all the money you spent on them doesn’t help or you have none and HR departments demand you have them anyway. Its a horrible catch-22, but there’s little we can do to alleviate it, aside from laugh and engage in community building. To help in that, PHM Publications has opened Certless.com. We hope you find it helpful, entertaining, and online!
