Apple, oh Apple. What hath thou done. Fine, I realize that I’m being a little over-dramatic, but I think its very well worth knowing that Apple has gone and taken the Pro out of the MacBook Pro line-up. Not by word, have they done this, but by act. Apple has removed from the MacBook Pro the one and only significant advantage it had over the lowly MacBook line, and it was a doozy; discreet graphics.

If I’m preaching to the choir right now and you didn’t already know this, your jaw is likely on the floor about now. If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, then I shall explain. There are two kinds of computer graphics systems which can be installed in a computer by the manufacturer, discreet and integrated. Starting with the latter, integrated graphics is a simplified set of chips which generate video for the computer. These are installed on the mainboard and cannot be replaced. Integrated graphics also share RAM from the system, so if you have 1GB of RAM (1024MBs) and your integrated graphics system uses 256MBs of RAM, then your computer ends up with a mere 768MBs of RAM to run on. All cheap laptops and netbooks use integrated graphics.

Discreet graphics, on the other hand, is like its own separate computer whose only job it is to create the graphics for your computer. It has its own RAM and it is usually installed as a separate board which can later be replaced if necessary. In this case, if you have 1GB of RAM and 256MBs of VRAM (Video RAM) then you still have 1GB of RAM for your system. It is the discreet video systems which professionals rely on from Apple because they are powerful and are capable of things which integrated systems simply aren’t. That’s a huge part of the Pro in MacBook Pro.

What Apple has done by bringing the unibody MacBook models into the MacBook Pro fold is to bring the concept of integrated graphics into the Pro line-up. Witness on the Apple Store page or in Phil Schiller’s keynote at yesterday’s WWDC 2009 kickoff the introduction of the NVIDIA 9400M chipset in not only the 13″ models but now also the entry-level 15″ model which starts at US$1,699. If you take a closer look you will see that the 9400M integrated chipset is on every single MacBook Pro in the entire line. Sure, they are alongside the more potent, discreet 9600M GT chipset and you can select which one to use, but the game has still been changed.

Integrated video is significantly cheaper than discreet video. Apple has always charged a relatively fair price for the cost of quality components, a consistency which no other computer company has ever been able to match, and a level of reliability which isn’t fair to the competition. Two things emerge from the change. First, to call a MacBook with integrated graphics just because they look the same, have SD card slots, and can use 8GBs of RAM is more like a bait-and-switch scheme. Second, to put only integrated graphics into the larger, Pro-level 15″ model is almost lying.

Business users who don’t need the powerful graphics sub-systems didn’t have a problem with using a computer called a MacBook. I know of few people who were unhappy that they had a MacBook when they knew that what they had was what they could afford. In fact, I know quite a few MacBook users who don’t like the larger, heavier MacBook Pro line and are quite pleased with what they already have. The only thing Apple did here was arrange a little smoke and mirrors with no real updates to anything, just a name change. I suppose its possible that Apple was feeling the pressure of not delivering on Snow Leopard and only having the iPhone 3Gs to announce.

Then again, they’ve also had the pressure put on them from Microsoft about the cost of their computers compared to what Microsoft’s hardware partners offer in a recent spate of ads. Apple seems to be responding (they’ll deny it) by evening out their pricing structure. If there’s anything to be said about Apple’s product line-up now, its well spaced.

[UPDATE] I received a note from my PR rep at Belkin indicating her disappointment at my post (which follows this added paragraph). The disappointment stems from the fact that I stated that the rep was from Belkin PR. The individual by the name of Michael Bayard is actually not in PR but is a Business Development Representative whose job it is to sell Belkin products to buyers. I understand her want to defend her department, but I still cannot defend the unethical choices made by Mr. Bayard, regardless of how common it is in the industry. You can find additional details here.

I have to say that I’m very disappointed to hear of this. Apparently, a PR rep at Belkin (not mine, fortunately) has been named as the individual blatantly offering $0.65 per fake review of Belkin products on social product review sites. That’s not all, however, as the fake reviewer was also required to find reviews to competing products and mark the reviews as negative in hopes that it would “delegitamize” them. This kind of baldfaced, scandalous, anti-competitive marketing is about as bad as it can get for people like me.

I’m a blogger. I started PDA Handyman in January of 2001, which means I’ve been doing this for 8 years now. I’ve had large and small readerships (I currently draw around 130,000 readers a month) and I created the site and maintain it because I wanted to carry my love of neat little gadgets to anyone interested in my opinion. With that in mind, I determined early on that I would be careful about how I would review products.

My first rule is simple. If I don’t think a product is of any value to me, I don’t request it from the vendor for review. This is why you don’t see reviews of (much less stories promoting) stupid ass products like USB hand warmers or Hello Kitty mobile phones. Sure, I’ll run up the flag on something stupid to ridicule it, but certainly never to give it any time in the limelight. I request quality products which I think will carry a value over to my readers.

To see, then, that this unscrupulous PR person at Belkin, a company whom I’ve had lots of dealing in the past with, was paying for reviews disgusts me. Later in the piece you will learn that Belkin would also prepare special ROMs for certain devices which would mask any of the known issues those devices were having to skew the results for the reviewer. Since I haven’t reviewed any Belkin products since the Great Mobodojo Revivial of 2008 or during PDA Handyman’s Halcyon Days, there are no Belkin products reviews on the site now.

In case you don’t know, and you likely don’t, PR people who ship out products for review will often open the product, charge it up, and insert a personal note or reviewers guide. It does now raise questions in my mind about who could have done what to anything I have reviewed, though from my experience I’d have to say that the chances of that happening are slim to none. As you know if you’re a regular reader, I very rarely give out 100% glowing reviews. In some cases, like Sony’s nearly unusable Mylo 2 internet tablet, I give very, very poor reviews.

My PR person looked at it and responded thusly:

“That’s a pretty rough review, but thanks for sending along the link. As for the P Series, I will add you to our list, but we have a bunch of requests, so it’s going to be a wait before we can get you a unit. I will be in touch, though, and will let you know as soon as we have one available. It’s a great product and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.”

As you can clearly see, I didn’t receive a note informing me that due to my unpleasant review of the Mylo 2 I would no longer be allowed to review Sony products. This is because there is an awareness between PR people and journalists which says that you win some and you lose some. PR people are paid to promote a product or a company, not to force a prescribed view on anyone. PR people are also pragmatic in understanding that not everything a company makes will the consumers like. The PR firm just won’t use any of my review in their PR pieces. I do know, however, that someone will come along and smartly decide not to buy something because of what I wrote.

For that, I’m glad. I want my readers to walk away from Mobodojo feeling like they got some value out of their time on the site. The last thing I’d ever want, as I imagine any legitimate blogger would, is to be considered a mouthpiece or a shill for a vendor or vendors. Belkin may need some time to restructure so they can save some face in this disgraceful debacle. I truly hope that they do. They make some good stuff.

It might as well be called Craig’s Lost now, of course Craig has already made his money from the failed endeavor, so I don’t imagine he really cares any more. If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, just poke around on Craig’s List and see if you can’t find some scam amongst all of the categories. My wife, who speaks several languages fluently including French, Hebrew, and Spanish, offered to tutor the daughter of a man seeking assistance.

Of course, it turns out the be a check cashing scam and my wife and I can see it coming a mile away, plenty of time to avoid the scam. Of course, not everyone will be able to sniff out the rat. If people had gotten wind of how it works then the scammers around the world, including the notorious Nigerian gangs, wouldn’t still be at it. In case you don’t quite get it yet, this is organized crime, dear readers. Here’s the ad itself:

I posted it here since it will likely be removed sometime very soon. Sadly, removal isn’t enough. There are so many scammers and so many scams that it may be impossible to ever stop it. Of course, there is one way to stop it. Tell your friends and family. Don’t be cordial or kind. Lay it on heavy. If you know someone who is unwilling to educate themselves about who to protect themselves from such scams or are susceptible to coersion, inform them of the level of idiot they are. Bluntly.

If this looks innocent to you, take a look at the reply which my wife received:

I would like to use these medium to inform you that my Daughter don’t live in the US, she would be flying from the Philippine to the US, I want you to teach her during her 8 month stay in the US, if there is need to extend your services, an amendment would be made to your salary. she would be dropped off/picked up by his nanny during the hours of teaching at any location you want the Tutoring to take place in your area.
You would be receiving a check drawn from a Bank in the US, from my business associates in the US, since i am from Philippine and right now am in Cuba for a business trip the payments wont be honored in any bank there in Philippine or here in Cuba , These check would be made out for the cost of the tutorial services you are rendering, and also for the living expense, nanny fees of my Daughter . Regarding this- I hope i can trust you with these payments, as the payment would be made out in excess, so all you have to do is Deposit and cash the payment at your bank, deduct your tutorial service fee, which should be $50 per hour X 12 Times a Month = $600 i would include an additional $100 for run around fee and any additional text book you might be needing- so $700 is what you deduct from the check you receive , whatever the remaining balance is after deduction of the $700 go ahead and deduct Money Gram or Western union transfer sending charges for sending out the remainder to the Nanny who would be contacting you with further arrangements and instructions regarding pickup/drop off of my Daughter to the library where you would always teach her. So i hope i can trust you that you will teach my Daughter good academics and some moral respects so that they can be good to their self in the future, i hope i can count on you for the tutorial and the money to be sent to the Nanny. I look forward to read a detailed message from you containing the following information, if you are OK with my arrangements.
Full Name.
Mailing Address including Zip Codes ( no PO Box pls ).
Cell No ( If Available ).
Home No.
Gender.
Best Time to Call.
Email.
N.B My Daughter Name is Christine Miller, She is actually coming to the US for sight seeing, but while she is here i want her to study at the same time, she understand English, can write and read fluently i just need her French and English Upgraded.
Thanks for your Understanding.
Collins

Note how there was no mention of the daughter travelling internationally. Miraculously the offer has risen from $45 to $50 and it will be provided in the form of advance payment in check form. Oh! And if there’s extra left over you can have that, too. Just deposit the check and wire the remainder of the money to the “Nanny”. If there’s something inside you which says this could be plausible, you need help. There are so many holes in this story its not even vaguely funny.

This, then, is why Craig’s List is now completely and officially useless. It can’t stop these scams and the system is designed to count on the smarts of strangers to report pages which are questionable. This is what people traded in for local print paper ads?

Insignia, if you didn’t know, is a brand name of Best Buy. Think of grocery stores and their in-house brands and you get the idea of how Insignia works for Best Buy. Of course, Insignia doesn’t make peanut butter and their products should not be considered generic. Insignia’s new Blu-Ray deck is an excellent example of this fact. When I removed it from the box I was struck by how sleek it looks. The front panel is almost entirely featureless and is glossy black. There are power and eject buttons and a basic control pad and, of course, the disc drawer.

Technically, the Insignia NS-2BRDVD is a very capable deck. Aside from the obvious Blu-Ray disc playback functions, it is also capable of playing standard DVDs. Its also capable of handling DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD and CD-R/RW discs and can read MP3, WMA and JPEG formats. It is also able to upconvert standard DVDs and outputs digital video in 720p, 1080i, and 1080p via the HDMI output port. Sadly, it does not come with an HDMI cable, but it does ship with a Composite set in the box.

The real business comes when you disconnect your old DVD player and plug in the BR deck using an HDMI cable. I connected the deck to my Westinghouse 32″ 1080i LCD TV. I was initially concerned that not having a 1080p capable set would limit my experience with Blu-Ray, but I was very, very wrong. I did not have to see the output of my old HDMI-capable Sony DVD deck next to the Insignia deck’s output to see the difference. It was immediately obvious to my wife and daughter and myself when I pushed in Over The Hedge.

The upconversion quality itself is astonishingly good. The colors are cleaner and sharper. The blacks are deeper. Even the surround sound is better (or that could have been in my mind). The overall clarity of the picture is just plain better without question. My PR rep had assured me that it would improve picture quality on 1080i, but now I knew for sure. What I was not prepared for, though, was an actual Blu-Ray disc. I’ll say it this way: I now feel bad that I don’t have a 1080p set of at least 42″ in size.

The picture is so good and clean and clear that I want to fill up my living room wall with it. This is the kind of good that makes you want a home theater very badly. I’m not heading in that direction any time soon, but I will definitely focus some of my energies on getting that upgrade in place as soon as I can. In the meantime, I can now marvel at the fact that I talked crap about Blu-Ray for no clear reason.

Okay, it was mostly because I’m sick of Sony constantly trying to take over existing markets with proprietary technologies which are incompatible. They couldn’t do VHS. They had to create BetaMax. They couldn’t get in CDs. They had to do the MiniDisc. They couldn’t jump on board with SD cards. They had to create the Memory Stick. It appears, however, that it was just time which would tell in the case of HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray… but I digress.

It turns out that there is something about Blu-Ray which I didn’t know; there are versions. There are versions 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 and not all Blu-Ray players are capable of all of them. One purchaser/reviewer on Best Buy’s website stated that, while this Insignia deck has Ethernet and USB ports specifically for software updates and BDLive, the hardware is currently using Revision 1.1. If it is, I can’t tell. Of course, when I get more Blu-Ray discs I’ll likely be able to test this.

In the meantime, I’m going to deeply enjoy what I already have and see where it takes me. The one thing I would ask Best Buy and/or Insignia to do is to add about 5 oz. of weight to the remote. Either that or change from AAA batteries to the slightly heavier AA batteries. Retail price for the Insignia Blu-Ray deck is US$250, but Best Buy is offering a US$50 discount so you can the deck for US$200. Not too shabby.

Yesterday was 9/11, a very dark day in American history. 2,975 people died that day as terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center towers and The Pentagon, while United Flight #93 crashed in Shanksville, missing its intended target. The actual event took place in 2001, but few people will ever forget the horror Americans felt that day, a feeling which was shared by millions of our human brothers and sisters around the world.

The people who died that day were not an attacking force. They didn’t have weapons. They weren’t on target to complete a mission. They didn’t have military sanctions to take out militants. They were people. Human beings going about their business and trying to earn a living wage. If you think that everyone in the WTC was rich, you need to rethink that.

Let us also not forget the 411 courageous men and women of New York City’s amazingly brave emergency services departments who braved the flames, dust, and wreckage to save other people from death. Those dedicated emergency response people and those simple, everyday folk were attacked and killed, not as human beings, but as one of the symbols of American wealth and power. Al Quieda looked at those twin towers and didn’t see people. They saw money and justified their attacks on that basis.

It was a cowardly, shameful, godless, selfish, and pointless attack which accomplished nothing but the deaths of thousands of innocent lives. But it didn’t stop there. It went on to cause thousands of more deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq, the innocent lives of Afghani and Iraqi people trying to survive life, survive petty, vicious dictatorships. It wasn’t already hard enough for them? Osama Bin Ladin and his cronies are unbelieveably ruthless, unthinking, misguided, destructive people who need to be stopped.

Terrorism is the most destructive and deadly form of bigotry we have on Earth and humankind has practiced various forms of it since time immemorial. When Segregation was rampant in this country, slaves were regularly lynched by members of the Klu Klux Klan. 9/11 is no less horrifying, but on a much larger scale. I truly, deep in my heart, believe that one day we can all live in an easier peace then we do today. Life may never be perfect, but I’d like to think that there will one day be no place that people can go where they feel the threat of death around every corner, especially in their own homes.

One day.

Word is that Dell will not make the Microsoft mistake and lump in with PlaysForSure, but will instead build a new digital media network. Dell’s aim is to bring a wide range of mobile media devices. It will be interesting to see what Dell comes up with, but rest assured that Apple isn’t resting on its laurels. So far, the Cupertino megalith has been able to preempt every single one of its competitors efforts to derail the mighty iPod. Time will tell, but you can read more about it at Business Week.

I love Apple, but there are a number of areas in which they fail, some of them miserably. In the case of who I will call Edward, Apple has apparently dropped the ball completely. Edward bought an Apple MacBook 2.16GHz model, in white, in the last week of January, 2006. All Apple computers come with a one year warranty to cover any failures or manufacturing defects. Apple’s process is to vet the issue over the phone and, if the support need is deemed valid, they send you a box to ship them your system. Apple has denied Edward service for his issue.

Edward’s issue appeared one week after his one year anniversary. The internal Ethernet jack stopped working. He rebooted the system. He applied all patches via Apple Software Update. He flashed the PRAM. He reset the power manager. He repaired all permissions. He even used a recent copy of Disk Warrior to make sure that there were no errors on the disk, all to no avail. The Ethernet port would simply not work, no matter how many cables or switches he connected to.

Edward contacted Apple support to see if they could work something out, despite being one week past his one year warranty coverage period. Apple turned him down. He writes about his communication with Apple:

Here is the Apple situation. They give you a two day grace period for warranty coverage. The letter [Apple] sent me to upgrade my warranty did not apply, even though they sent it three weeks ago. [Apple] stated that they didn’t care what I have purchased in the past nor that I have done business with Apple in the past. They would not, under any circumstances, allow me to purchase an extended warranty. They also told me that they would not escalate the call.

Edward goes on to say that he was treated worse than the treatment he has received from Microsoft and that he would seriously reconsider ever purchasing from Apple again.

What I find amazing in this is that, despite the fact that he had purchased an extended warranty at a personal cost of US$250, Apple would not apply that warranty coverage to his machine. Edward walked into an Apple Store in his local area, explained the problem to an Apple employee, and was told to communicate with Apple Support the next day to have them escalate the call. The employee did not tell Edward that purchasing the AppleCare extended warranty would not help and he was advised by Apple Support that he should, “return the box for a refund.”

In The Dojo’s estimation, this is the worst kind of customer service. If there was already such a restrictive ruling in place, all Apple employees who deal directly with the associated elements should have been fully versed in their implementation. In the case of Edward, Apple is not only denying him service, but also the ability to upgrade his warranty, at cost to himself, in a form which works for him.

Edward is a senior systems engineer for a consultancy which generates nearly $2 million in revenues annually. Approximately 40% of their client’s systems are Apple Macintosh. If what Apple does in these situations sends a negative message to the engineers, what does Apple think they will pass on to their clients?

I am passing a link to this story to a representative at Apple at the same time I am publishing this for public reaction. We may or may not hear back from Apple on this issue. If I do, I’ll post the updates.

There have been only a handful of real technological innovations during our industrial and technological ages. Most of what we have created and devised for ourselves and our human comforts have been derivatives of something else. It is the core technology which was the real breakthrough, as is the case with the slick and cool Nokia N95 8GB. While it is a decidedly clean, powerful, and pretty converged device, it remains just that; a stepping stone. Many pundits and fanbois call the N95 8GB, Nokia’s iPhone. Personally, I don’t see it. What I do see is a phone, a media player, a personal media player, a PIM, a game machine, and a camera (actually two) all rolled into one device.

Does it thrill me? Yes. I can say that clearly and without quibble. Does it move me, though? No. It cannot and will not move me like the iPhone does. To give you a clear idea of what it takes to move me, here’s a small, incomplete, unqualified list of things which have (in no particular order): the entire Aston Martin line, the Apple Newton MessagePads, the Original Palm III, NEC’s MobilePro line before the 900c, the birth of my one and only child, a month in the Maine wilderness on Outward Bound when I was 15, Apple’s iPhone, IBM’s ThinkPad line (pre-Lenovo), the Atari 800, the Amiga 3000 with Video Toaster at the Pasadena Community Access Channel.

If you note the theme, these are things or events which were singular to me. If you’ll excuse the events from the list and focus only on the technologies you may detect that there are certain forms and functions which I find seminal. It was NEC who developed a truly usable ultraportable with a true convergence of power and usability, with primary focus on its fully typeable keyboard. The Newton’s and the Palm III speak for themselves as the co-parents of the PDA movement. IBM’s ThinkPad line redefined what a laptop should be. The Atari 800 was, at least in my estimation, the first true integration of gaming and computing with any quality behind it. The iPhone is the epitome of all the lessons everyone has learned about a real pocket companion. And really, who the hell can resist falling in love with an Aston Martin.

Now, when you look at the N95 8GB what do you see? Its just another Symbian S60 device at its core, its really thick, the slider slides too easily, the absence of a better keyboard is very irksome, the directional pad sucks for playing games, and there’s no lens cover for the 5MP camera. Yet, despite all of this, people are clamoring for it. Maybe because there’s so much more to the N95 8GB than the laundry list of failings. In reality, there is. There’s so much to this handset and Nokia has done very well making the S60 version of the Symbian OS work good with one hand. In order to clearly see the quality, I’m going to review each element of it separately.

The Phone

Lets face it. Nokia makes phones. They make some really good ones and they make some abysmally bad ones, but the N95 8GB is not one of the latter. This is, in my opinion, one of the finer smart-ish phones Nokia has ever made. Why smart-ish? I believe that any real smartphone must have a touchscreen and a QWERTY keyboard. The N95 8GB has neither, but it still manages to do just about everything a real smartphone can do. Just don’t get any ideas that you can really manage your email with it.

Everything you’d expect in a mobile handset is here. It has a call history, quality voicemail access, a complete address book complete with in-depth contacts data fields, and it even integrates VoIP technology via its embedded 802.11b/g radio. Where it excels is in speakerphone mode. The device has stereo speakers, one on either side of the top of the unit, and they sound really good. The mic even works so your other party can hear you. The N95 8GB could truly act as a conferencing system stand-in if the need arose.

The handsets VoIP capabilities appear to also be rather cool, though I didn’t get a chance to review them. It does come with GIZMO integration which is a kind of Skype service. I’ve looked over the site and I even have an account which I created a few years back, but I’ve never really used it. Just to put that in perspective, I’ve had about US$12 in Skype credit for the last two years. Its not that I don’t like the idea. I just never use it. I guess I’m a fuddy duddy in that sense. You have a phone, you use it to call people, and they know you by that number.

The Media Player

Let me make this clear right up front. This is no iPod or an iPod killer. I have a 60GB 5G iPod in black which I keep in its case all the time and generally use as a hard drive based media player for my car. My lappy, a MacBook Pro, is my iTunes when I’m not driving. With that said, Nokia has devised a rather good media player. I’m more than a little miffed that they use RealPlayer for video, but I haven’t tried hacking that just yet, nor have I tried to watch any full-length movies on it. I just don’t like Real or RealPlayer. They’ve never been good. Its just me.

Audio and video are separated into two different applications which are converged via the Gallery tool, which gives you a unified look at all of your media-related files. It also doesn’t care whether its on the phones internal memory or on the Mass Storage drive, as Nokia refers to it. You just pick something and go. The N95 8GB not only runs the app necessary to view the file, but it also tracks your moves so when the video or audio is done, you have a back button which returns you to the Gallery. It makes what would normally be something navigation intensive into something smooth and usable.

On my review handset, I was mostly treated to the UK version of the N95 8GB experience. I was able to subscribe to podcasts, download videos from various providers, look at popular YouTube videos, and even gawk (or guffaw) at some included Nokia marketing material. There’s one video called “Snowboard” which really shows off the N95′s audio and video capabilities, too. I don’t know if that file, however, is included with all N95 8GB devices. At the time of this review, the Nokia Music Store was not yet available.

The Game Console

Back when it came out I reviewed the original Nokia N-Gage, affectionately known as the “Metal Taco”, and I did not like it. Nokia sent me two so I could use the multiplayer capabilities and one of them was DOA. Needless to say, I wasn’t too thrilled about the N-Gage over my then hot Nintendo Game Boy Advance. The controls were good and the games seemed cool, especially Tony Hawk, but it just didn’t fulfill the ideals of all components. It was a miserable phone.

However, the N95 8GB isn’t miserable as a phone, though its not that good as a game console. This mostly sources from the controls. Lets face it. Its a mobile handset. It was designed as a mobile handset. It functions as a mobile handset. The controls just suck when it comes to games. I don’t really understand why all these phone makers keep designing their phone buttons all the same way and then expect people to play games on them.

The idea of to stop putting the Select button in the middle of the cursor controller. If that weren’t bad enough, everyone then clusters the Call, End Call, Left Soft, Right Soft, and various other buttons right around it. Density supports convenience in phones meant to be phones, but not on phones also destined to be game consoles. Once the madness ends, then I’ll be interested. Until then, there are few games I would spend a lot of time playing on a mobile handset.

The Camera

First off, understand that I’m am against combining large megapixel cameras into mobiles. Its not right and its unfair to the consumer who has to either settle or demote their desires in order to own a specific phone. I can guarantee you that when people go to buy a phone, their first thought isn’t about the camera. To whit, when consumers are looking for cameras, they aren’t shopping for phones. The addition of the camera is the markets attempt to converge for the sake of sales and could care less about what you think.

With that said, the Nokia N95 8GB comes with not one, but two cameras. The first one is a massive 5MP auto-focus camera with built-in flash which can take video and has a load of features. The second is a .3MP affair on the face of the phone and is included to facilitate video calls (as if there were any). I suppose you can call another N95 8GB, but I don’t know if you need a specific plan. Its also likely that it could tie into the GIZMO system which does support video over IP connections.

Pictures are nice and video is very clear. I’m not a photographic or videographic expert, so I can’t tell you any of the specifications aside from resolution. The flash seems to work very well, but I’m a big fan of no flash shots, since I feel it ruins the natural light. You switch from Image to Video modes via a menu selection. The Video mode captures MPEG-4 and 3GP, and the Image mode captures… images. Yeah. JPEG, I believe.

How It Talks

What I mean here is how it plays with others. I’m a Mac guy, as you likely know (and if you didn’t, now you do), so I prefer that most, if not all, of my toys be both Mac and Windows capable, even better if they can do Linux. In the case of the N95 8GB, it would not initially mount on my Mac desktop. It would, however, work with Windows inside of Parallels and in Vista under Boot Camp. There are several ways for the N95 8GB to talk with computers. Its primary form is through Nokia’s complex collection of desktop communication software for Windows. While the new interface is cleaner than earlier versions, I still find it overly cumbersome for general use. It would be nice if they could develop a Palm Desktop-like integrated environment instead of having the dozen or so little apps they use now.

What I do find shameful is that it takes about 40 minutes to transfer 1.45GBs of music files over a USB 2.0 connection, in both Windows and Mac OS X. This simply isn’t acceptable. I can sync 20+ GBs to my 5G iPod over USB 2.0 in the same time, if not less. I tested in Mac OS X using the Mass Storage setting, in Windows Vista Ultimate under Boot Camp, and on an HP dc7800p Small Form Factor desktop system running Windows Vista Business Edition. Its not the source hardware, its the phone which I believe is causing the delay. I would have thought that Nokia would have more throughly tested this before allowing it to go to market.

The Wrap Up

Back in early 2007 I was listening to the TWiT podcast and Leo LaPorte was saying how he has an N95 that he loves, but was distressed at how short the battery life was. Jump forward almost a year and we now have Tyler from The Dojo with an 8GB version of the same phone, and I can say that the battery life must have improved somehow. I’m not thrilled by the fact that I can run down the battery in a few hours if I try really hard, but even with music and video playing, I’m not doing a lot of damage, unless I’m using GPS. In any case, you should count on having a car charger.

Now, however, comes the hard part. Sure, its easy to review something, but how objective could I be if I didn’t also evaluate the device’s cost, and herein lies the rub with the Nokia N95 8GB device. It’s priced in the US at US$779, just shy of $800. Add yourself a nice leather case and tax if you’re in a state which has one, and you’re talking close to US$1,000 for a phone. A PHONE. Logically, though, that’s the cost from Nokia direct. They charge based on the cost and don’t subtract a subsidy based on revenue projections per user.

How much would you spend if you were to buy each device separately? First, its a really good phone. That will run you roughly US$300 without subsidy. Getting a decent 5MP camera with quality optics will run you around US$200. An 8GB Apple iPod Nano with video retails for around US$250. Total that up and you you come up with $750. Get cases for all of those devices and you’re look at another $150, so $900. Now, total in the cost of having to juggle all of these devices which is really a subjective concept, and you’re talking at least the same cost, if not more, of the N95 8GB.

So, can I recommend it? Sure. Am I swayed by all of its features and just love it to death forever and ever and ever? No. The one thing that kills me is the standard phone keypad. If it just slid the other way and had a little thumbboard, then I’d be all over it and a half. That I could do, but that’s not what Nokia did.

Beta testers and developers know that RTM means Release To Manufacturing. This means that Microsoft has released Office 2008 for the Mac to be localized, duplicated, packed and shipped to be available worldwide by January 15th, 2008. This version adds Universal Binary support, the new file formats from Office 2007 for Windows, and brings a new Entourage which is supposed to be function identical to Outlook 2007 and have full Exchange support. I’ll have a more complete rundown closer to the MacWorld Expo.

Palm isn’t doing so well, again. On recent news of a delay of a new product and lower than expected revenues from the popular Palm Centro device, Palm’s stock has been dropping like mobile network calls (that’s a joke). Yeah. Despite its brisk sales of the smaller, cooler, less expensive Palm smartphone, the Centro, its not pulling in enough revenue to make projections, and investors show their displeasure by selling stock. This MacWorld article also points out that they are also facing RIM, Apple, and Motorola with pretty much nothing.

I used to be an unabashed Palm lover, and in some ways I still am. I hate Windows Mobile since it hasn’t changed significantly since the days of Windows CE 1.0 and it still crashes with regularity. Symbian is nice, but too complicated, and nobody has come up with a decent, marketable Linux-based mobile OS yet, including Palm. Palm used to be the rock. Why can’t they get their act together?
