I’m no fan of malicious cracking, but I love hackers. A real hacker is someone who takes something and learns as much as they can about how it works. They then pass that knowledge on to everyone else to do with what they like. Ignorant people like news people and the gullible are under the impression that “hacker” means bad person with m4d n3rd skillz who perpetrates evil.

Just so you know, its the real hackers who have already crammed themselves inside the 4-day old Apple TV to give you what you want; more codecs. What does that mean for you? Simply put it means that you can watch any video you like from most sources, instead of what Apple wants to limit you to. If you’re a n3wb13 (or can’t read the previous word), don’t try this yet, but keep an eye on it. If you’re 1337 then check this out.

Gotta love that Star Trek. I am, since I’m watching the entire DS9 series over again on Spike TV. Now the iTunes store is again selling The Original Series (TOS for you non-Trekkers) in both the original form and the new updated CG versions. Here’s the MacNN story. Here’s the iTunes link. I just hope that Paramount’s upcoming Trek revival doesn’t suck like Enterprise did (no offense, Scott Bakula).

If you mourn the loss of most Apple-powered campuses, feel free to rejoice. Wilkes University has announced that they will replace all on-campus systems with BootCamp-enabled Macs to facilitate students OS choice. Estimates are that they will save $150,000 up front despite Apple’s slightly higher cost per unit and that they will save in the long run on support and service. Smart move, Wilkes!

If you need ANY validation for your love of Apple (even being more accepting of its few flaws) then simply read this love letter from Leander Kahney of Cult of Mac fame (cults are so messy! Churches are neat). Contrary to what he says, though, I still talk to people who complain about price and one guy who thought the keyboards on the MacBook Pros were crappy. Feh!

If there’s anyone who should speak well of Microsoft it would be Robert Scoble, the companies recently former chief technology evangelist. Scoble, in fact, has been credited with softening the general public’s opinion of the software giant (not that they deserve it). Now, however, he has turned on Microsoft after Steve Ballmer, the World’s Most Dangerous CEOâ„¢, told the collected (Collective?) MVP that Microsoft is “in it to win”. Scoble fired back at Ballmer with scathing words. In a nutshell, he said that everything about Microsoft’s internet strategy “sucks”. Read it for yourself. The only part missing is his praise for Apple ;)
