Why Apple Is Done With MacWorld

Steve Jobs- Photo: AP/Paul SakumaI think, after much reflection and ruminating, that I have a clear idea of what the problem is for Apple and why Steve Jobs is no longer needing Apple to be as prolific as it has been in the marketplace. Apple announced last month (Dec. 2008) that they would no longer be attending MacWorld shows. I don’t think this is the right choice or the logical choice based on the issues Apple will be facing in the next decade of the Cupertino giant, but I do think Steve Jobs was right to change the way Apple operates.

Apple has reached a point where they are now the defacto name of cool in the technical space. Apple has a cachet which Microsoft never had and it looks like Apple is now trying to capitalize on that. The simple truth is that cool doesn’t carry, and Apple will have to fundamentally modify its strategy to continue to grow. Its become clear that Steve may have figured out that no matter how many moves of the chess pieces he orchestrates, there is no longer anything new Apple can do that will have the Zing Factor of the iPhone.

MacRumors MacWorld Keynote Feed Hacked

I’m periodically amazed at the lengths hackers will go to do something stupid. What they are doing now is hacking MacRumors live blog feed from the MacWorld keynote. The first comment indicated that Steve Jobs had died, which is untrue. Then comes the ownership from 4CHAN.ORG and/or /G/URUS Here’s a screencap from before they went down [...]

Products Apple Will NOT Introduce At MacWorld

We’ve been hearing it for years… People blabbing on and on about what they’d like Apple to introduce at this or that show. Its goes the same every time. Apple announces they will announce something and every Apple peep on the planet starts positing about what Apple will be introducing. It takes up a large amount [...]

Will Anyone Ever Catch-up To Apple?

While Sprint is laughing all the way to the bank a bit early, Apple is about to unveil what will almost undoubtedly be the 3G iPhone 2.0. Sprint thinks its laughing because its Instinct, announced earlier this year, will feature 3G and GPS, and they’ve made no bones about creating videos slamming the iPhone for lacking those features. I have a feeling, though, that Sprint has stopped laughing a long time ago, seeing as how Apple’s iPhone 2.0 should have both of those features and, ironically enough, before Sprint releases its Instinct. It makes you wonder why Sprint and other companies don’t adopt the same PR approach as Apple.

After all, what is the point of one-upping Apple when your efforts fall flat on their face anyway? I beg your pardon if I’m hammering at this point, but what purpose did it serve Sprint to pre-announce the Instinct as an iPhone killer? They must really feel like asses now, or at least they will come Monday when Jobs whips out yet another “One More Thing”. His Steveness, after all, has created a PR system which doesn’t talk, doesn’t proselytize, doesn’t dole out freebies to anyone who asks, and isn’t warm and fuzzy. Apple PR is cold, efficient, quiet, and very, very effective.

Musings On Apple’s WWDC 2008

Wow! San Fran added another Golden Gate Bridge? Neato! Its that time of year again, when developers in league with Apple crawl out of their laboratories to migrate for that annual mecca in San Francisco, CA. know as the World Wide Developers Conference. It is at the WWDC, where programmers speak Objective C better than English, gather to learn about what Papa Jobs has for them this year. Interestingly enough, one of the biggest developer announcements ever has already been let out of the bag; Apple’s iPhone SDK as well as other significant announcements. What does this mean for a WWDC whose slogan is “A landmark event. In more ways than one.” Examine this slogan, the image above, and the cryptic message from the MacWorld expo (which ended up announcing the MacBook Air with “There’s something in the air”) and we have a new conundrum.
