ZodTTD Gets iControlPad Video

Homebrew gaming site, ZodTTD, has received a video from the creators of the iControlPad hardware controller add-on for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The video shows the user playing Quake4iPhone using a pre-production model of the device. Apparently the iControlPad will only work with homebrew games on jailbroke (jailbreaked? jailbroken?) devices, though there is a possibility that there may someday be games which can be downloaded from the Apple App Store which will work with the hotly anticipated accessory. I’m going to take it that you enjoy your iPhone and/or iTouch, not only for how it works, the music, and the video capabilities, but also for its entertainment capabilities. There’s something missing, however, in a gaming console (Apple admits it, so I’m not making it up) which only offers touch and accellerometer-based input. Gaming needs something more as evidenced clearly by the well established video game console market. Some other guys thought so, too, so they created the iControlPad. Some other people with money liked the idea, so its going to get made into a product. As you can see from the image of the prototype it sports a control pad, four action buttons, and what look like ovals for a pair of speakers, but are really Start and Select buttons (feh). The iControlPad team has stated that its now out for production and that the final version will support the original iPhones and iTouches, all in one unit. Very nice. Too bad there’s no indication of pricing or availability yet. [Source: ZodTTD]

Asteroids Watch Cool, Sucks At The Same Time

This thing just plain rawks. Too bad its not a product in planning. Its the product of John Maushammer’s imagination and skill with electronics. He’s the same guy who created the Pong watch, but he wasn’t entirely satisfied with its lack of fun factor. It could either be perfect, so you’d never beat it, or he could intreoduce a flaw, but then he’d know it was there. The Asteroids watch takes care of that by using an accelerometer to control the action. Very, very cool, John. You suck (at least until someone makes it into a product).

Sony Preps PSP-3000 For Tuesday

If you’re a Sony fan and you like the PlayStation Portable, aka the PSP, then you may be interested to find out that Sony will purportedly be releasing the new model this coming Tuesday. The PSP-3000 looks to be curvier and more compact than its previous form factor. Personally, I thought the first version was just plain fugly. I’ve also never quite understood why Sony continues to place the analog joystick near the bottom edge of the device where its much harder to get a feel for it. There’s no idea of pricing, though the norm is to price it at the same as the previous model’s MSRP. Sony may also retain the older model for a tad and offer it at lower prices. The new model seems to ship with Ratchet & CLank: Size Matters and a copy of National Treasure 2. [The Current Model]

Nintendo To Roll Out DSi… In 2009

True to its nature, Nintendo does not disappoint. Of course, they don’t wow, either, but the DSi is a hot little gadget. The Big N has officially announced the next revision of its super popular DS line, the DSi. After ripping out the Game Boy Advance compatibility slot, they add a 3MP camera, an SD card slot, and increase the size of the dual displays. If there is any truth to the images on the Japanese site, there are actually two cameras as well as an updated user interface which includes a Mac Photo Booth-like image tweaking tool to make yourself and your friends look funnier than you already do. Now, here’s the slap in the face: While Japan will get the new DSi on November 1st, the EU and the US won’t see it until later in 2009, possibly even as later as early Summer. Pricing is set at US$179.

Pandora Project Progress Update

That little device sitting on to of the Asus Eee PC which is sitting on top of some full-sized laptop in the image to the left is the result of the Pandora Project. Its a computer. Its a laptop. Its an internet device. Its a gaming machine. It looks a lot like a Nintendo DS, but its not. The project itself is the result of a group of people working together to create the first 100% open sourced mobile gaming device, and they’re getting very close. Check out the site and then swing over to this Engadget story for some video of it in operation. Its also been revealed that the finished version will be available before the Christmas season this year and its priced at £199.99 (that’s in the UK) and the first round will offer only 3,000 units. This suggests that there will be more, but no word on a US launch.

Some Nokia Gaming News Coming

I’m not going to let on just yet, but I’ll say that I’ve got some juicy mobile gaming news coming from Nokia. I got to spend some time with Senior Creator and Producer of the game himself, Scott Foe, and everyone is in for a real treat. I’m going to collect some more data and get it together, but trust me when I say that gaming on handsets is about to get much more fun than it has been.

Pandora Ultra Portable Growing Nigh?

Got yourself a yen for a pocketable Linux device that actually works like a desktop system? Sure ya do! Therefore, the Pandora people (I can’t tell you if that’s the product name, project name, or the dog’s name, but its from the guys who brought us the GP32X) are building it for you. Word from Pandora is that they are shipping development units this month or next and general “development kits” will be available to anyone in June or July. Pricing in the States will be US$330 (£199 inc. VAT, €212 exc. VAT).

You want specs? Easy: The DS-like unit sports an ARM Cortex A8 CPU running at ~600MHz (likely 624MHz), 4.3″ 800×480 16-bit touchscreen display, PowerVR SGX 3D video chipset, integrated Wi-Fi, a USB host port, dual SDHC card slots, and even S-Video out! No decisions have yet been made on RAM or on-board storage, but the battery will be a 4000mAh LiIon monster. If you have more questions, check out the FAQ. There will be around 100 units of the developer model made and around 3,000 of the user model when it gets finalized. I’m gonna try like hell to get one!

LeapFrog Readies Leapster2, Didj Devices

While LeapFrog isn’t known for skirting on the edge of technological advancement, they do build some solid devices and I like their focus on education. They have announced that coming Summer 2008 they will be offering the new Leapster2, a slimmer, faster device, and their new Didj ‘tween device. The Didj features a 3.2″ 24-bit 240×320 display, an ARM9 CPU running at 393MHz, and 256MBs of Flash ROM. I’m sure the hackmasters will be all over this one, since its priced at US$89.99. The Leapster2 will retail for US$69.99. Titles for the two systems will go for US$24.99 and keep your eyes out for Star Wars: Clone Wars for both.
