AMD To Battle Intel’s Atom Line?

Its just rumor at the moment, but from a solid source; Notebooks.com. AMD, at its annual financial analysts day, could be announcing a new CPU line which would go head-to-head against Intel’s Atom line which targets low cost and low power systems, specifically netbooks. Even the name of the CPU is just a rumor, going by the name Bobcat. Yeah. Small and vicious. I’d like to see that.

Meizu M8 iClone Making US Shores?

Could it be possible? Might we actually be able to see the semi-legendary Chinese-made Meizu M8 iPhone-clone phone which Apple most certainly will not condone become available in the US? Possibly. In a blog post on the MeizuMe fan site, user LeaveIndia indicates he spoke to J. Wong who, in turn, told him that the M8 would be available in China on November 30th, albeit sans wi-fi software due to a ban from the Chinese government. Unless I’m missing the wording entirely, this means that the wi-fi hardware remains, likely making it easy to activate. A US version with wi-fi enabled is claimed to drop, if all things go well, on December 24th. Hmm. Interesting. Unless this is utter crap, this may get interesting.

BenQ S6 MID May Go Worldwide?

BenQ’s technical specifications for its S6 MID has proven to be grist for the rumor mill. The Italian carrier, TIM, has already signed up to punt the hot MID, but Engadget believes that its very American GSM frequencies strongly suggest that the Atom-powered could be jumping the Pond. I, for one, would be first in line. I love my Nokia N810, but really want some real power in my pocket.

Dell Inspiron 910 Specs Leaked?

Netbooks have been super crazy popular this year, and next year the netbook market is expected to explode even larger. Me? I hate it because there are so many cool little gadgets out there now I can’t hope to ever find a need for all of them. One of the models I’ve been eyeing, though, is Dell’s little guy, which is now officially dubbed the Inspiron 910. It should have been something like Dell MicroNote or Dell PowerNote or something else cool instead of this [FAIL] from marketing. Of course, none of it really matters if Dell’s going down the tubes. The Giz said their sources were saying August 22nd, but here we are a week later a nothing. Ok, not nothing, but what we did hear is that Dell managed to lose about 17% of its value in one day or really, really bad trading. Dell chalks it up to falling system prices and the economy. Does that mean our new little favorite is going the way of the Palm Foleo? We’ll just have to wait and see. [Source: Gizmodo]

BenQ MID Aries2 Hitting The EU?

Now that the netbook craze has started to plateau, keep your eyes open for the MID revolution. The MID, or Mobile Internet Device, has been around for some time, most successfully in the form of Nokia’s Internet Tablet line (the 770, N800, and N810). This isn’t going to last long, though, as BenQ is illustrating with its Aries2. The unit will reportedly sport an 800MHz Atom, 512MBs of RAM, and a 4GB SSD. It will also likely include various forms of wireless. So, why is it in the Rumor Mill? The only word right now is that it will be released in the EU sometime this quarter. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Dell E Possibly Confirmed For August

One of the hottest of the micronic lappies going around is Dell’s hot E, which has been referred to as the Inspiron Mini. Engadget is elucidating that the E will eviscerate the Eee in every eventual market, and with less letters. If the US$299 E ships as indicated, it could have a chilling effect on the rest of the Netbook market, due solely to Dell’s sheer size in the world markets and their marketing power. Personally, I’m looking forward to the device, especially if it does come ship in that slick package and offer a WWAN option which sits alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Lets just say that my mourning period for the snuffed-before-its-prime Palm Foleo will have ended handily.

WWDC Nears, iPhone, Apple MID Rumors Grow

As we get closer to the “hallowed” event for this year, the iRumormill has been ratcheted up. First, I don’t think there’s any question that the 3G iPhone will be out soon. Stock of existing First Generation handsets have petered out and refurbs are selling for dirt cheap. AT&T slipped and added a reference to a black version of the iPhone to its website, and mistakenly responded by saying that it was a placeholder. I certainly didn’t fall for that. Then, out of nowhere, the Intel chief for Germany comes out and says that there “is” a somewhat larger iPhone powered by Intel’s new Atom CPU, bringing with it suggestions that the Newton MessagePad has been revived. As always, only time can tell.

iPhone 3G Evidence In SDK Beta?

More and more juicy little tidbits about Apple’s move to 3G in its second gen iPhone handsets keeps popping up. The image here is apparently from the latest edition of the SDK beta program from Apple, clearly indicating that 3G will be an option. Allowing users to turn off 3G, and likely continue to use the EDGE network, could very easily be one way for Apple to guarantee its battery lifetime instead of waiting for lower consumption hardware. There’s also additional evidence from AT&T itself that suggests the long talked about “Black” handset is a reality.

Psystar Likely Not Real

Those feckless heathens over at Gizmodo have dug up yet more dirt on the so-called Psystar debacle. While its not yet proven without a shadow of a doubt, it seems pretty clear that Psystar is simply either some kind of gag or a very badly mis-managed attempt at legitimacy. 3G Apple iPhone And Refreshed MacBooks?

First up, AppleInsider is reporting that “Uncle” Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, one of the privileged few whom Apple actually favors in the press, has strongly suggested that Apple will be shipping a 3G iPhone within 60 days. This falls within the range of days before the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June, where many are speculating Apple will announce the newest version of its handheld, as well as officially launch iPhone 2.0, which includes Exchange compatibility and other enterprise friendly features as well as 3rd party software developer support.

Additionally, AppleInsider is suggesting that it has details on Apple’s upcoming plans for its suspected overhaul of their MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. One big suggestion is that the MacBook will more from plastics to metals for the external case, making it more Pro and Air looking. As always, only time, and Steve Jobs on Keynote day, will tell.
