Sony Re-prices PlayStation 2 To US$99.99

It appears that I’m the last one to the news game on this one, folks, but I felt it important to note that Sony has dropped the price of the PlayStation 2 to US$99.99 starting on April 1st. No, its not a tired, old prank, either. Frankly, this is a rather good move for Sony, one of the few smart plays the ailing Japanese giant has made in several years. Sony is the first manufacturer in the video games business to maintain two distinct platforms for a significant amount of time. The PS2 shipped in 2000 and the PS3 a couple of years ago now. With a portable device, an entry-level home machine, and a top end gamah killah, they have the bases covered. Now, that doesn’t say that they’ll beat Nintendo at the game they’ve been winning for 20+ years now, but Sony is clearly giving the market its smartest shot.

Elecorn Offers Up Caster 3D For Mac & Win

One man dev shop Elecorn is offering their (his?) game, Caster, for Mac and Windows systems. I don’t know when it came out, but I came across some details regarding the possibility that it will be ported to the Pandora gaming console (when’s that shipping, again?), so I decided to check it out. There’s a demo available and the first episode is available now for a very reasonable US$9.99. Its very small in size and runs well on my MacBook Pro (2.3GHz with ATI video). Here’s a screenshot.

I Now Own A Nintendo Wii

I’ve gone and done it. I’ve bought a Nintendo Wii. This will be the first gaming console I’ve purchased since the Sega DreamCast, and I bought that just as it was being cancelled. I was pretty pist at Sega for ditching the game console market. The DreamCast was a fantastic system. I don’t have it hooked up any more, but even today its games can compete. The Wii, however, is a fundamentally different gaming platform, and that’s why I bought it as opposed to a PlayStation 3 or an Xbox 360.

I bought it primarily for its fitness aspects with the aim of getting myself and my family into shape for 2009. To that end I got the Wii Fit. For now our Wii collection stands at the Wii which comes bundled with Wii Sports, Wii Fit with the balance board, Wii Play, Resident Evil 4, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I also got an extra controller and nunchuk. I already had a 2GB SD card, so I didn’t get one at from Nintendo at an inflated price.

The only thing I’m disappointed about is that the Wii doens’t output video in HD. That seems like a bad choice considering that the entire US market is going HD by Federal decree in less than 2 months. The Wii comes with a composite adapter which isn’t bad, but I’ll probably get the MadCatz Component adapter for US$19.99 to get better image quality on my 32″ HD TV. I’m pretty amazed at the huge number of control functions available via the WiiMote and Nunchuk, though.

Oh, and I’ll be reviewing Wii stuff from now on. Cool.

Cheaper COD4: Modern Warfare

I haven’t gotten my copy yet, but Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is supposed to be supah hawt! I played through 90% of Call of Duty 2 for the Mac, but had an OS issue and I lost my save file. Feh. Regardless, COD2 on a MacBook Pro is more phenomenal than you can believe, so I expect COD4 to rock the house. Now, you can get Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for cheaper at Apple.com and they throw in free shipping to boot. Nice!

Beyond The Red Line For Mac

If you love Battlestar Galactica (its ok to love both the new series and the original), you love games, and you are on a Mac, then you’re gonna love Beyond The Red Line. Based on the classic Freespace 2 engine, this free title brings BSG to your Mac in grand style. How much will it cost you? Nothing! That’s right. Its free, as in NO MONEY. These guys are fantastic.

Check out the site here. Its very cool. You may note that there is only one Mac mirror, at least last time I looked. The site does offer a BitTorrent version, but not many people were latching on when I fetched it. With that said, you can download a copy direct from us here. Its a big file, so be prepared for a wait.
